Cooler-than-average temperatures, with dry weather gradually giving way to rain, are forecast for northern Taiwan over the next few days, but the mercury is expected to inch back up at the start of next week, the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) said Wednesday.
According to the bureau, cloudy to sunny skies and slightly weaker winds are forecast across Taiwan on Thursday, with a chance of rain in mountainous areas in central and southern parts of the country.
From Friday through Sunday, gradually wetter conditions will develop, bringing a possibility of scattered showers in the north, east and on the Hengchun Peninsula in the south, the bureau said.
In particular, the northern and northeastern coast, as well as mountainous areas in Greater Taipei, could see relatively heavy rain from Friday night through Saturday, the CWB said.
Temperature-wise, daily highs in the north are expected to remain around 27 degrees Celsius through Saturday, after which drier conditions and highs of around 30 degrees will prevail going into next week, the bureau said.
Over the next week, Hsinchu and Miaoli, as well as Chiayi and Tainan could see especially cool overnight lows due to a process known as radiative cooling, which is most pronounced under clear skies, CWB forecaster Chao Hung (趙竑) told CNA.
On Wednesday, Emei Township in Hsinchu reported the coldest overnight temperature in the nation at 16 degrees, CWB data shows.
