Disney+ announces subscriber access to 1,200 movies ahead of Taiwan launch

The Walt Disney Company has revealed Disney+ subscribers in Taiwan will have access to 1,200 movies and 16,000 TV episodes, ahead of the service's local launch on Nov. 12.

Prices of NT$270 per month and NT$2,790 per year for the video-on-demand over-the-top service were announced Friday at an online press conference.

Disney+ hopes to entice viewers with ad-free content from its namesake studio, as well as company-owned entities Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, National Geographic and Star.

The company said movies such as "Black Widow" and "Avengers: Endgame," as well as TV series such as "WandaVision," "Loki," and "The Falcon and the Winter Soldier" will all be part of the service's offerings.

Subscribers will be able to download content to up to 10 devices at any one time, as well as stream it on up to four.

"Disney+ Day" events will be held worldwide on the day of the Taiwan Nov. 12 rollout, which coincides with the service's two-year anniversary.

At Friday's press conference, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige said the new shows, episodes and movies available on Disney+ would be updated on a weekly basis.

Disney's approach contrasts with the market leader in Taiwan, Netflix, with Feige reasoning that incremental releases create a sense of anticipation among audiences.

Feige went on to say Marvel Studios was considering working with more Asian partners in the future, following the box office success of "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings" in 2021.

Video streaming services have been tipped to become another battleground between rival telecoms giants Taiwan Mobile and Chunghwa Telecom.

Taiwan Mobile is reportedly on the brink of an exclusive deal with Disney+ to offer discounted fees and other bundled promotions to its users.

The rumored deal is being viewed in some quarters as a bid to eat into the market dominance of Netflix, which established an ongoing partnership with Chunghwa in 2019.
