Government to help Chinese spouses via cross-strait channels: MAC

Taiwan's government will provide assistance to any Chinese nationals with permanent residency in Taiwan who are facing problems in returning after having gone to China to give up their Chinese household registration, the Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) said Monday.

The MAC, Taiwan's top government agency handling cross-Taiwan Strait affairs, said the government will provide necessary assistance to those affected through existing cross-strait exchange channels.

The issue came to light after a Taiwanese citizen's Chinese wife gave an account on social media about how she had encountered problems when applying to get the "Taiwan travel permit for Mainland residents" from the Chinese authorities, which is necessary for Chinese citizens going to Taiwan.

The woman had returned to China to apply for a certificate to prove that she had given up her household registration there.

According to Taiwan's Act Governing Relations between the People of the Taiwan Area and the Mainland Area and related regulations, Chinese people who apply for household registration in Taiwan must give up their original household registration in China.

The MAC said that it had contacted the woman and would handle this matter.

Over the years, special consideration has been given to Chinese applicants for Taiwan permanent residency who were unable to return to China to apply for relevant documents due to special factors and personal safety considerations, the MAC noted.
