Heavy Rain Causes Major Disruptions in Northern Taiwan

Hsinchu: Hsinchu and Miaoli counties in northern Taiwan experienced significant disruptions due to torrential rain. Railway services in western Taiwan were interrupted as floodwaters submerged tracks, and air traffic at Taichung and Tainan airports faced delays caused by thunderstorms.

According to Focus Taiwan, in Hsinchu County, Fire Bureau personnel rescued more than 10 residents in the mountainous Beipu and Emei townships who were trapped by rising floodwaters. The heavy rain also led to flooding, fallen trees, and landslides in several mountainous areas, closing roads in Wufeng, Jianshih, and Beipu townships. Hsinchu County Magistrate Yang Wen-ke confirmed these incidents.

In Hsinchu City, rainfall reached up to 50.5 millimeters per hour, causing severe flooding. The city government opened a level-three emergency response center to manage the aftermath. As of 8 a.m., the city reported four disaster cases, including flooding in private homes, a flooded underpass, and a fallen tree. The flooding issues were later resolved. The city government made sandbags available 24 hours a day for residents at East, North, and Xiangshan district offices.

In Miaoli County, flooding was reported around Tongxiao Power Plant, with water levels in Houlong Township reaching tire height. County Magistrate Chung Tung-chin mentioned that roads near a Carrefour outlet in Miaoli City and an underpass were closed, necessitating alternative routes. Several roads in the mountainous Nanzhuang Township were also closed due to flooding. Chung announced the opening of a level-three emergency response center to integrate resources.

Thunderstorms severely impacted operations at Taichung and Tainan airports. The Civil Aeronautics Administration (CAA) suspended ground operations at Taichung airport around 8:16 a.m. Five flights, including three international and two domestic, were delayed before the thunderstorm advisory was lifted at 9:50 a.m. Operations at Tainan airport were also suspended at 1:07 p.m., with the CAA warning of potential flight delays.

Taiwan Railway Corp. reported that floodwaters submerged tracks in Miaoli and Zhunan. Repair work restored services between Miaoli and Zhunan around 3 p.m., and single-track services between Danshan and Houlong are now operational.
