Taipei: A Chinese military helicopter was detected crossing the Taiwan Strait median line on Monday, marking what is believed to be an unprecedented occurrence. According to Focus Taiwan, two aircraft-namely, a Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) helicopter and a PLA drone-were observed operating on Taiwan's side of the Taiwan Strait from 10:20 a.m. to 7:40 p.m. on the day in question. During the 24-hour period from 6 a.m. Monday to 6 a.m. Tuesday, MND reported the detection of five PLA warships, six Chinese official vessels, and four PLA aircraft sorties active around Taiwan. Chieh Chung, a researcher at the government-funded Institute for National Defense and Security Research (INDSR), stated that this event is likely the first instance of a PLA helicopter crossing the median line. China has increased military activity across the median line following the visit of then-U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan in August 2022, effectively dissolving the previously respected tacit boundary. On Monday, however, the helicopter not only crossed the median line but also operated for an extended period within Taiwan's designated no-fly zone. This operation represents a new form of "gray-zone" activity, involving ambiguous or nontraditional methods aimed at achieving strategic objectives without triggering open conflict. Chieh highlighted the uncertainty over whether the PLA helicopter was a shipborne aircraft or dispatched from a PLA Army aviation base along China's coast.
