Japan’s population fell in every prefecture for the first time.

TOKYO, July 26: Japan's population fell by 801,000 in 2022, the biggest drop and the first drop across all 47 prefectures since records began in 1968.

Japan's Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications released information today. Japan had a population of 122,423,038 in 2022, down 801,000 from 2021, according to Japan's Kyodo News. This trend suggests Japan needs to speed up measures to tackle declining birthrates and improve job opportunities for young people and rural women.
