Three Taiwanese returning home from a notorious human trafficking hotspot in Myanmar were arrested Saturday on suspicion of being connected to a criminal ring in the Southeast Asian country, police said Sunday.
The three individuals from the "KK Park," which has been allegedly involved in organ harvesting and sex trafficking, were found to be fugitives and may be members of a telecom extortion ring based in the park, according to the Criminal Investigation Bureau (CIB).
Among them was a suspect surnamed Ko (?), who was on Taiwan's wanted list for forgery and currency counterfeiting and is thought to be an associate of the fraud ring based in the park, the CIB said.
According to the CIB, Ko allegedly used social media to catfish victims through dating apps and then directing them to websites pitching fraudulent investment opportunities.
The CIB did not indicate that he was involved in human trafficking operations.
A total of 16 people returned from KK Park returned to Taiwan on Saturday night after transiting in Bangkok. Beyond the three travelers who were arrested at the airport, another three may be victims as cases had been filed to search for them, police said.
The CIB, which is working with Thai authorities to intercept members of the KK Park ring as they transfer through Thailand before arriving in Taiwan, said some of the criminal rings in KK Park have begun to "collapse" under international pressure and are starting to release victims and dismissing members.
