K-pop idol Hyolyn to headline Taipei New Year’s Eve celebrations

Korean singer Hyolyn will headline Taipei's New Year's Eve celebrations, with the K-Pop star set to be joined by local Taiwanese acts including Nine One One (???), Rene Liu (???), Abao, 9m88, and Flesh Juicer.

In a statement Friday, Taipei's Department of Information and Tourism (TPEDOIT) revealed that Hyolyn, nicknamed "Korea's Beyoncé," would headline the free concert in front of City Hall, which runs from 7 p.m. on Dec. 31 through to 1 a.m. Jan. 1.

However, TPEDOIT said it would not reveal the order and the times of each individual performance until Dec. 22.

In a prerecorded video, Hyolyn, who currently is in Seoul, said she was very happy to be returning to Taipei after her world tour made a stop in the capital last month.

"To be able to see everybody again makes me happy and excited as we celebrate and say goodbye to 2022 and welcome 2023. I have prepared to put on a spectacular show I hope you all look forward to it," Hyolyn said.

Taipei 101 will set off 16,000 fireworks over five minutes to ring in the New Year, with simultaneous light displays on all four sides of the skyscraper to mark the arrival of 2023, according to the Taipei Financial Center Corp.

The fireworks, which cost NT$50 million (US$1.63 million), will be accompanied by a light show staged using a T-Pad, moving light beams, lasers, animations, and music, Taipei 101 Chairman Chang Hsueh-shun (???) told a press conference on Thursday.

Meanwhile, to help revelers get home, services on the Taipei Metro, excluding the Xiaobitan and Xinbeitou branch lines, will run non-stop for 42 hours from 6 a.m. Dec. 31 to 11:59 p.m. Jan. 1, the Taipei Rapid Transit Corp. said in a statement Thursday.
