Kaohsiung Couple Detained for Alleged Child Abuse Leading to Daughter’s Death

Kaohsiung:A court in Kaohsiung has approved the detention of a couple suspected of fatally abusing their 2-year-old daughter. Emergency services were called to the family's home in the Sanmin District on Thursday evening, where they found the child in out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. Despite efforts, she was later pronounced dead, prompting an investigation by prosecutors.

According to Focus Taiwan, the Kaohsiung District Prosecutors' Office conducted an examination and autopsy on the child to determine if a crime had been committed. The investigation also revealed the couple's 1-year-old son showed signs of abuse.

Prosecutors questioned the parents, identified as Hsiung and Deng, and believe they committed intentional harm and impeded the development of a child under age 7. Hsiung is further suspected of drug use. The court approved a request to detain both parents incommunicado.

The family's 1-year-old son remains hospitalized for observation, while their eldest daughter, under 7 years old, has been placed in protective care.
