Magnitude 4.9 earthquake rocks eastern Taiwan

A magnitude 4.9 earthquake occurred in waters off Taiwan’s southeastern coast at 7:53 p.m. Tuesday, according to the Central Weather Bureau.

The epicenter of the earthquake was located 40.6 kilometers south-southwest of Taitung County Hall, at a depth of 9.8 km, the bureau’s Seismology Center said.

The earthquake’s intensity, which gauges the actual effect of a temblor, was highest in Taitung County, where it measured 3 on Taiwan’s 7-tier intensity scale.
