Magnitude 5.8 Earthquake Shakes Northeastern Taiwan

Yilan: A magnitude 5.8 earthquake struck northeastern Taiwan's Yilan County at 9:53 a.m. Wednesday, according to the Central Weather Administration (CWA). The epicenter of the temblor was located in Su'ao Township in Yilan County, approximately 15.5 kilometers south-southeast of Yilan County Hall, at a depth of 72.4 km. According to Focus Taiwan, there were no immediate reports of damage resulting from Wednesday morning's earthquake. Taipei's Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) temporarily slowed down its trains in response to the quake. The earthquake's intensity, which gauges the actual effect of a temblor, was highest in Yilan County and Hualien County, where it measured 4 on Taiwan's 7-tier intensity scale. The quake also measured an intensity of 3 in Taoyuan, New Taipei, and Taichung, as well as in Nantou, Hsinchu, and Changhua counties, the CWA said. The earthquake on Wednesday follows a magnitude 5.9 quake that hit about 130 km off the coast of Yilan County on Tuesday night at 11:26 p.m. That quake was felt mos t strongly in Hualien County.
