Taitung: A magnitude 5.8 earthquake struck off the coast of southeastern Taiwan at 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, according to the Central Weather Administration (CWA). There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.
According to Focus Taiwan, the epicenter of the temblor was located at sea, about 48.0 kilometers east-southeast of Taitung County Hall, at a depth of 13.1 km. The earthquake's intensity was highest in Taitung County, where it measured 4 on Taiwan's 7-tier intensity scale.
The quake also measured an intensity of 3 in Hualien County, Chiayi County, Yunlin County, Tainan, and Chiayi City, the CWA said. Alerts are issued to cities and counties expected to experience at least Level 4 seismic intensity for earthquakes of magnitude 5.0 or greater, and at least Level 3 for earthquakes of magnitude 6.5 or greater.
