Taipei: A Taiwanese man was arrested after allegedly kicking a 2-year-old Filipino girl in the abdomen in the lobby of Taipei Main Station on Saturday afternoon, according to the Railway Police Bureau. The bureau's Taipei Precinct reported receiving a call at 2:25 p.m. regarding an assault on a member of the public at the station.
According to Focus Taiwan, officers reviewed footage from surveillance cameras and subsequently arrested a suspect surnamed Lee, who is in his 40s. First responders at the scene found the young victim conscious but with swelling on her face and limbs before she was taken to the hospital.
The two-year-old girl was transported to National Taiwan University Hospital for treatment. Police stated that the girl was with her parents when Lee allegedly attacked her. After being kicked, the girl fell to the ground and Lee reportedly stepped on her back.
Passersby who witnessed the incident immediately notified police. The motive behind Lee's assault is under investigation. Police have not ruled out the possibility of referring the case to the Taipei District Prosecutors Office to file charges against him on suspicion of attempted murder.
