New Taipei: A 63-year-old man was questioned by police and released in New Taipei on Sunday after allegedly punching a female volunteer during a recall campaign event, police said Tuesday. The incident occurred amid efforts to recall opposition Kuomintang (KMT) lawmaker Lo Ming-tsai.
According to Focus Taiwan, the man, identified by his surname Huang, was referred to prosecutors on suspicion of assault. The altercation took place during a recall event in Zhonghe District, where Huang reportedly became upset over flyers that did not include a free gift. In his frustration, he allegedly struck the 46-year-old volunteer on the head before engaging in a scuffle with other volunteers and subsequently leaving the scene.
The victim sought medical attention but did not sustain serious injuries. She later filed a police report, supported by her fellow volunteers. The recall campaign group has condemned the incident, labeling it an attack on democratic values.
