Taiwan’s leading smartphone IC designer MediaTek Inc. recorded its second-highest-ever monthly sales total, with market analysts attributing the company’s strong performance in September to client phone launches.
In a statement, MediaTek said it posted NT$56.57 billion (US$1.77 billion) in consolidated sales in September, up 26.56 percent from a month earlier and 18.09 percent from a year earlier, trailing only March’s total of NT$59.18 billion.
MediaTek’s consolidated sales totaled NT$142.16 billion in the third quarter of 2022, within the forecast range of NT$141.7 billion to NT$154.2 billion.
However, the company’s third-quarter revenues fell 8.71 percent compared to the second quarter due to some clients adjusting their inventories.
MediaTek said its consolidated sales totaled NT$440.6 billion in the first nine months of 2022, up 20.79 percent from a year earlier.
According to MediaTek, the company expects its sales to grow 17-19 percent in 2022 compared with 2021, a downgrade from its previous estimate of a 20 percent year-over-year increase due to inventory adjustments among its clients.
Also on Tuesday, MediaTek introduced its newest chipset — the Dimensity 1080 — to its Dimensity portfolio for 5G smartphones.
MediaTek said smartphones powered by the Dimensity 1080 would become available by the fourth quarter of this year.
According to MediaTek, the new 5G chipset offers a performance bump and advanced camera features compared with its predecessor, the Dimensity 920.
The IC designer said the Dimensity 1080 features an upgraded octa-core CPU with two Arm Cortex-A78 CPU cores operating at up to 2.6GHz, combined with an Arm Mali-G68 GPU, for faster performance whether users are gaming, streaming or browsing.
The chipset, made on the advanced 6-nanometer process, provides a host of power-savings benefits to allow a longer battery life, MediaTek said.
