Taipei: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) on Tuesday expressed appreciation to a bipartisan group of U.S. senators for introducing a resolution that commended Taiwan on the 30th anniversary of its inaugural direct presidential election.
According to Focus Taiwan, the resolution, presented on Monday, commemorated the historic event that took place on March 23, 1996. It praised Taiwan for exemplifying self-governance in the Pacific region and beyond. The resolution further recognized Taiwan's democracy as a significant strategic asset for the free world, while reaffirming the Senate's commitment to supporting Taiwan's self-defense. It also underscored U.S. policy towards Taiwan under the Taiwan Relations Act, the Six Assurances, and the Three Communiques.
The resolution was spearheaded by Democratic senators Tammy Duckworth and Tim Kaine, alongside Republican Senator John Curtis. In response, MOFA expressed its hope for continued international support for democratic Taiwan through tangible actions. The ministry emphasized its commitment to collaborating with the U.S. and other democracies to advance regional peace, stability, and prosperity.
Minister of Foreign Affairs Lin Chia-lung also acknowledged the U.S. Congress's sustained recognition of Taiwan's democratic progress and extended gratitude for the enduring bipartisan support from the United States.
