Four people were injured in a multiple vehicle pileup on a section of the upgraded Suhua Highway near the northbound exit of the Su'ao Tunnel in Yilan County on Saturday, according to local police.
A five-vehicle crash occurred at around noon on a northbound lane of the upgraded highway, police said, noting that the injured had been rushed to hospitals but no one had suffered life-threatening injuries.
The cause of the accident is still being investigated, they said.
Chen Kuo-cheng (???), an official of the Fourth Maintenance Office at the Directorate General of Highways, said traffic was restored to a single lane at 1:30 p.m. after the entire northbound section had been temporarily closed to motorists due to the accident.
Officially opened in January 2020, the new Suhua Highway, which forms part of Provincial Highway 9, includes three stretches and links Yilan and Hualien counties.
The original Suhua highway is well-known for its winding, cliff-hugging roads that are vulnerable to rockslides.
