NPP lawmaker angered by ad promoting Taiwan’s unification with China

New Power Party (NPP) Legislator Chiu Hsien-chih (???) criticized businessman John Peng (???) Tuesday for placing an advertisement in a Taiwanese newspaper to promote Taiwan's "peaceful unification" with China.

In his Facebook post, Chiu said Peng, who currently sits on the board of Taiwan's Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF), had engaged in the spread of Beijing's political propaganda through a full-page advertisement in the China Times, a Chinese-language newspaper published in Taiwan, on Tuesday.

In his capacity as chairman of AGCMT Creation Corp., Peng claimed in the advertisement that "peaceful unification and peaceful development will shape the best future of people across the Taiwan Strait."

People across the strait are part of one family, Peng said in the advertisement, urging President Tsai Ing-wen (???) to work to ensure the safety of Taiwanese and prevent war with China.

According to Chiu, the possibility of war in the Taiwan Strait will depend on China's cessation of its hostility toward Taiwan.

Taiwanese people do not want to go to war, but they will not fear fighting one, Chiu said, urging the government to consider removing Peng from the board of SEF, a semi-official body assigned to conduct day-to-day affairs between Taiwan and China.

Currently, the foundation's board consists of 56 directors, including senior government officials and representatives of private companies. The SEF declined to comment on the issue.
