OLYMPICS/Lee makes history in Beijing as Taiwan’s first female Olympic alpine skier

Taiwanese Lee Wen-yi (???) competed Wednesday in the Alpine Skiing--Women's Slalom in the Beijing Winter Olympics, becoming the first female Olympian from her country to take part in that event.

In the event, each competitor makes two runs down the slope, and skier with the fastest total time is declared the winner.

On Wednesday, 88 skiers competed in the Alpine Skiing--Women's Slalom, and Lee was among the 50 who managed to finish both runs.

The 19-year-old Taiwanese completed a somewhat bumpy first run at the Yanqing National Alpine Skiing Center in a time of 1:36.49, but did significantly better on her second run, clocking 1:09.55.

While Lee finished last with a total time of 2:46.04, she made history as the first female Taiwanese skier to compete in the Alpine Skiing--Women's Slalom event in the Winter Olympics.

The winner was Petra Vlhova of Slovakia, who snagged her first Olympic medal and the first for her country in that event, finishing with a total time of 1:44.98.

Austria's Katharina Liensberger won silver, and Switzerland's Wendy Holdener took bronze in the event.
