Taipei: Paraguayan President Santiago Peña held a meeting with former Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen, during which both sides renewed their friendship and the two countries' commitment to each other, as Peña wrapped up his first state visit to Taiwan. According to Focus Taiwan, Peña expressed in a social media post that he met with Tsai, whom he described as "a great friend of Paraguay," during his visit. He highlighted the robust bilateral agenda shared by the two nations, underscoring the years of a solid alliance characterized by cooperation projects and investments benefiting the Paraguayan populace. While the specific timing of their meeting was not disclosed, the two leaders have a history of interaction, with Tsai having congratulated Peña via telephone after his election victory in May 2023, followed by Peña's visit to Taiwan in July of the same year. On Sunday, Taiwanese Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung accompanied Peña to the Southern Taiwan Science Park and the National Center for High-performance C omputing in Tainan to showcase Taiwan's advancements in artificial intelligence, computing, and technology governance. Lin also hosted a lunch for Peña's delegation at a restaurant noted for traditional Taiwanese cuisine, followed by a tour of Chimei Museum, known for its vast collection of Western art and musical instruments. Peña and his entourage departed Taiwan on Sunday afternoon, heading to the Philippines as the next destination on their regional tour. During Peña's visit, Taiwan's Presidential Office and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) reported that he witnessed the signing of several significant agreements. These included a treaty on mutual legal assistance in combating crime, a memorandum of understanding on cybersecurity cooperation, and an MOU related to the Paraguay-Taiwan sovereign AI and computing infrastructure investment project. Additionally, President Lai Ching-te awarded Peña a decoration in acknowledgment of his support for Taiwan at international forums. Accompanying Peña was a delegation of over 40 Paraguayan business representatives, led by Industry and Commerce Minister Marco Riquelme. The group visited Taiwanese companies to explore business prospects and bolster the Taiwan-Paraguay supply chain, as stated by MOFA.
