Prosecutors in Kaohsiung will make a decision Monday over charges against a car driver who struck and killed a woman on a pedestrian crossing Sunday while five times over the legal blood alcohol limit.
The 38-year old suspect, identified by his last name Huang (?), was caught driving under the influence after he struck a family of four using a pedestrian crossing on the intersection of Hedong Road and Guomin Street in the city's Cianjin District at around 7 p.m. Sunday.
A 37-year-old woman surnamed Fan (?) lost her vital signs at the scene and was later declared dead upon arrival at hospital.
Her 45-year old husband and two daughters, aged 15 and 14, all suffered serious injuries and are all currently still in intensive care.
Huang was arrested by the police at the scene, and a subsequent breathalyzer revealed he had a blood alcohol level of 1.24 milligrams per liter (mg/l), about five times the legal limit of 0.25mg/l.
A preliminary investigation revealed that the driver had brought a bottle of whiskey to drink with his friends at a coffee shop in Yancheng District a few hours before the accident.
Huang's passenger at the time of the incident was also questioned by the police Sunday evening and subsequently fined NT$3,000 for failing a moral responsibility by not preventing Huang from getting behind the wheel.
According to Kaohsiung Police Department Commissioner Huang Ming-chao (???), the man had two prior DUIs from 2006 and 2009, with both incidents resulting in no injuries.
Huang is currently being questioned by the Xinxing police precinct, which will later hand the case over to the Kaohsiung District Prosecutors Office to determine what charges to file against the suspect.
