Taiwan’s Chan Hao-ching (???) and Chinese partner Yang Zhaoxuan (???) were knocked out in the quarterfinals of the women’s doubles at tennis’ Australian Open Wednesday, losing to Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula of the United States 1-6, 1-6.
Eleventh seeds Chan and Yang’s underdog status was evident in the straight sets defeat, with their second-seeded American opponents dominating for much of the last-eight encounter at the Margaret Court Arena in Melbourne.
The Taiwanese-Chinese pairing yielded five game points in a row in a first set that saw them make the first four of an overall five unforced errors.
Despite Chan and Yang winning the second set’s opening game, Gauff and Pegula reasserted control of the tie, winning the next six games in a row and with it the match.
Prior to this year, Chan, ranked No. 37 in the world for women’s doubles, had made it to the quarterfinals at the Australian Open women’s doubles on three occasions with sister Latisha Chan (???), with the Taiwanese duo reaching the semifinals in 2020.
Pegula and Gauff, both top-ten women’s singles players, finished runner-ups in the women’s doubles at last year’s French Open.
Despite the loss, Yang still left her best women’s doubles record at the tournament since she started playing in the Grand Slam event in 2015. Yang was the 10th-best double player according to the tournament’s official rankings.
