Nai-Ni Chen dances in her own piece, “Mirage.” Choreographer and dancer Nai-Ni Chen died on Dec. 12 at the age of 62, while swimming off the beach in Honolulu. Bridging centuries-old Chinese traditions and contemporary art, Chen was a brilliant performer and a humanitarian whose sophisticated theater works often involved collaborations with contemporary musicians. Her Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company is based in Fort Lee, and she was a principal affiliate artist of the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark.
