Seasonal winds to send mercury down to 13 degrees over New Year’s

Seasonal northeasterly winds are expected to affect northern Taiwan over New Year’s, with temperatures pushed down to 13-16 degrees Celsius between Friday and Sunday, according to a Central Weather Bureau (CWB) forecast Thursday.

A seasonal northeasterly wind system is expected to strengthen on Thursday, bringing lower temperatures to northern and northeastern Taiwan during the long weekend.

Meanwhile, central and southern parts of the island are expected to see large fluctuations between daytime and nighttime temperatures.

Between New Year’s Eve and New Year New Year’s Day, low-lying areas of the island can expect lows of 13-15 degrees, with the mercury likely to fall to below 11 degrees in some areas south of Hsinchu due to radiative cooling effects, according to Wu Der-rong (???), a meteorologist and adjunct associate professor of atmospheric sciences at National Central University.

On Friday and Saturday, windward areas on the east coast and eastern parts of Greater Taipei are likely to see cloudy weather with occasional rainfall, while other areas can expect cloudy to sunny skies, according to the CWB.

The bureau has also forecast isolated rainfall for northern Taiwan due to an increase in humidity.

The mercury will rise slightly with cloudy or sunny skies prevailing on Monday and Tuesday next week as seasonal northeasterly winds weaken.

On Thursday, as a weather front passing through Taiwan combines with strengthening northeasterly winds, eastern parts of Taiwan can expect occasional rainfall.

However, as the cold air will be relatively dry, only the eastern side of Greater Taipei is likely to see sporadic rainfall, while other areas in northern Taiwan can expect cloudy or sunny skies.

Due to the impact of northeasterly winds, the mercury could drop to around 14-17 degrees on Thursday, with temperatures potentially reaching highs of 18 degrees in the north, 19-22 degrees in central Taiwan and Hualien in the east, and 23-25 degrees in southern Taiwan and Taitung in the southeast, according to the bureau.
