SK Group chairman appeals high court ruling on his divorce case

SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won on Thursday appealed a high court's ruling ordering him to pay 1.38 trillion won (US$1 billion) in property division to his estranged wife in the country's most expensive divorce suit, sources said. Since the Seoul High Court made the ruling last month, Chey has claimed there was a "critical error" in the calculation of his estranged wife's contribution to the growth of the country's second-largest conglomerate. The appellate court had determined the combined property of Chey and his wife, Roh So-young, to be 4 trillion won, with a division rate of 65 percent for Chey and 35 percent for Roh, but the SK Group chairman said the court has made an error on whether his stocks in the company are subject to the division and how much they are worth. The court corrected its calculation error but did not change its conclusion, saying the error does not affect the ratio and subject of the property division. Chey and Roh, the former President Roh Tae-woo's only daughter, married in 1988 and have three children. Chey announced a divorce plan in 2015, admitting to having an extramarital lover and a child with her, and filed for a divorce settlement two years later. After years of resistance, Roh raised a countersuit in 2019, demanding half of the SK shares owned by Chey in the property division. Source: Yonhap News Agency
