Taipower begins trial operation of its first offshore wind farm

Taiwan Power Co. (Taipower) is currently conducting a trial operation of the state-run company's first offshore wind farm, before connecting it to the national power grid, the Ministry of Economic Affairs said Saturday.

Taipower completed the interconnection of 21 wind turbines off the coast of Changhua County as part of the first phase of the wind farm in late August, the ministry said.

The company is running tests and making adjustments before applying for a license to put the wind farm into service, the ministry said.

The first phase of the wind farm has a capacity of 109.2 MegaWatts and can generate around 360 million kWh of electricity a year, which will supply nearly 90,000 households, according to the ministry.

Taipower last year finalized the bidding process to find a contractor to build the second phase of the project, with the contract going to local energy firm Shinfox Corp. Phase two will have 300MW capacity and is expected to be completed in 2025.
