Taiwan drumming troupe celebrates Tibetan culture in new show

Award-winning Taiwanese drumming group U-Theatre will premiere its new show "Tibetan Kora" in Taipei on Nov. 5 as part of this year's Tibetan Culture and Art Festival.

At a press event Thursday, U-Theatre Artistic Director Huang Chih-chun (???) said the inspiration for "Tibetan Kora" was drawn from a pilgrimage made by the troupe to Tibet over two decades ago.

Huang said the majority of the trip had been tough for the group because of the high-altitude and inhospitable terrain.

However, he noticed that the pilgrims he met along the way had a devotion that seemed to have freed them from physical pain and allowed them to take every step with calmness.

This unique experience motivated the group to delve deeper into Tibetan culture for their new show, which is being staged at National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall for two nights at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 5-6.

Huang said that "Tibetan Kora" would be very different from U-Theatre's past works, which were characterized by more theatrical elements, instead integrating folk songs, dancing and religious rituals from Tibet.

The performance is part of the 7th edition of the Tibetan Culture and Art Festival, which is hosted by the Ministry of Culture (MOC) and aims to promote Tibetan culture in Taiwan.

Vice Culture Minister Lee Lien-chuan (???) said it was hoped that the performance's integration of Tibetan traditions with the contemporary arts would allow audiences to find the culture more approachable.

Admission to the two performances is free, and online tickets are available on MOC's website. Those wishing to see the show can also visit the Mongolian and Tibetan Cultural Center in Taipei to pick up a ticket in person.

MOC said that more events at the festival, which will last through December, will be announced later.
