Taiwan female boxer wins third Golden Belt title this year

Taiwanese boxer Chen Nien-chin (???) won a gold medal -- her third this year -- at the World Boxing Tour's Golden Belt Series tournament held in Guadalajara, Mexico on Friday, local time.

Chen, 25, faced Ichrak Chaib of Algeria in the women's light middle weight (66-70 kg) final, and secured a 4-1 decision at the International Boxing Association's inaugural World Boxing Tour, which began with a Silver Belt Series event in Slovenia in October.

Chen's latest victory is her third this year, after winning the Thailand Open in April and the ASBC (Asian Boxing Confederation) Asian Elite Boxing Championships 2022 in Jordan in November.

In addition to a gold medal, Chen was honored with the best sports spirit award at the 2022 Sports Elite Awards organized by Taiwan's Sports Administration in Taipei on Friday.

The two-time Olympian was given the award for competing in the 2020 Tokyo Games, even though she had undergone chemotherapies for Hodgkin's lymphoma diagnosed in November 2019 which has been in remission since late 2020. She only made her fight against the disease public in October 2021.

Chen's gold medal was the third won by Taiwanese boxers at the tournament in Mexico, after Lin Yu-ting's (???) 5-0 victory against Carrillo Carrillo Jennifer Yazmin of Mexico in the final of the women's feather weight (54-57 kg), and Wu Shih-yi's (???) 5-0 win over Hadjila Khelif of Algeria in the women's light weight (57-60 kg) category.

Lin was also named the year's best female athlete at the Sports Elite Awards.

Meanwhile, 2016 Olympic bronze medalist Lai Chu-en (???) and 2020 Olympic bronze medalist Huang Hsiao-wen (???) won bronze medals in the men's light welterweight category (60-63.5 kg) and women's flyweight (50-52 kg) category, respectively.

Taiwanese boxers will compete in three more finals on the final day of the tournament on Saturday, according to a post on Chen's Facebook page.

A total of eight Taiwanese boxers traveled to Mexico for the tournament.
