The 2022 Fulong International Sand Sculpture Arts Festival in New Taipei will highlight Taiwan's popular glove puppetry when it opens on May 26, with 36 sculptures to be displayed through Oct. 10, according to the organizers.
Representatives of Fullon Hotels and Resorts, which held a press event to promote the festival, said the main highlight this year will be an eight-meter-tall sand statue of Su Huan-jen (???), the main character of Pili, one of Taiwan's best-known glove puppetry studios.
According to the hotel group, the displays will feature statues of Su in different disguises as well as other Pili characters.
During the event, visitors will also have a chance to meet with the actors behind these fictional characters and take part in other activities.
Wu Chien-chih (???), deputy director of the Northeast and Yilan Coast National Scenic Area Administration, said his office will host various events in conjunction with the sand festival, to be held at Fulong Beach.
These events will be organized on weekends from June to October and include concerts, a food and souvenir market, and experience workshops for visitors to try their hand at making sand sculptures, Wu said.
