Taiwan pledges US$200,000 in donations to hurricane-hit Belize

Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) on Friday pledged to donate US$200,000 to Belizeans affected by Hurricane Lisa, which struck the Caribbean nation two days ago.

The pledged donation will be allocated to help Belizean people who have been displaced due to the hurricane resettle and rebuild their homes, MOFA said in a statement.

The ministry added that it would remain in touch with the Belizean government and provide necessary assistance to the ally.

No known Taiwanese nationals living in Belize have been adversely affected by the hurricane, according to MOFA.

Hurricane Lisa made landfall in Belize on Wednesday, causing flooding in some areas and leaving parts of the country in darkness and without water because strong winds had toppled electric poles, several international news outlets reported.

As of Friday evening, there were no reported deaths in the Caribbean nation due to the hurricane.

Lisa weakened to a tropical storm as it moved towards Mexico, where it was further downgraded to a tropical depression, according to reports.
