Taipei: Taiwan Railway Corp. (TRC) Chairperson Du Wei on Saturday declined to comment on reports that he has tendered his resignation. The speculation emerged after a source in the Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC) revealed that Du had suddenly submitted his resignation due to "personal career plans."
According to Focus Taiwan, the MOTC attempted to persuade Du to remain in his position, but he was firm in his decision. During his tenure, Du was on the verge of implementing a project aimed at raising Taiwan Railway ticket fares, which have remained unchanged for 30 years.
When questioned about his potential resignation at a charity event at Taipei Main Station on Saturday, Du expressed that it was not the appropriate occasion to discuss such matters. Du Wei's academic credentials include a bachelor's degree in transportation and communication management science and a master's degree in political science. His career with the Taiwan Railways Administration (TRA) began as an intern, eventually leading to his role as the last TRA director-general before the organization was corporatized on January 1, 2024, making him the first TRC chairperson.
The source indicated that Du's resignation has been reported to the Executive Yuan, and upon approval, Deputy Transportation Minister Wu Sheng-yuan is expected to serve as the acting chairperson.
