Taipei:The Taiex, Taiwan Stock Exchange's benchmark index, has reached a new high, elevating Taiwan to the position of the fourth-largest stock market in the world by market value as of Wednesday afternoon.
According to Focus Taiwan, the Taiex surged by 357.12 points, or 0.75 percent, achieving a new high of 48,157.29. This increase propelled the market capitalization of Taiwan's main board to approximately US$5.3 trillion. As of 5 p.m. Wednesday, Taiwan surpassed India, which had a market value of US$4.94 trillion, to claim the fourth spot globally.
The rise in Taiwan's stock market has been supported by a global boom in artificial intelligence development. This year alone, the Taiex has soared by 19,193.69 points, or 66.27 percent, following a significant increase of 5,928.50 points for 275.73 percent in 2025.
MarketCapWatch data indicated that Taiwan is now behind only the United States, with a market capitalization of US$82.7 trillion, China at US$21.22 trillion, and Japan at US$8.59 trillion. The United Kingdom ranks sixth with a market cap of US$4.86 trillion, followed by South Korea, Canada, France, and Germany.
