Taiwanese Lawmakers Head to Japan for Asian-Pacific Parliamentarians’ Union Meeting

Taipei: Deputy Legislative Speaker Johnny Chiang on Monday led a cross-party delegation to Japan to attend a regional parliamentary assembly in Tokyo. The delegation is composed of 13 other Taiwanese lawmakers, including six from the ruling Democratic Progressive Party, six from the main opposition Kuomintang, and one from the Taiwan People's Party. According to Focus Taiwan, the legislators are scheduled to participate in the three-day 54th Asian-Pacific Parliamentarians' Union (APPU) General Assembly and the 88th APPU Council Meeting. These meetings are taking place from Monday through Wednesday at the House of Representatives First Members' Office Building in Tokyo. The event aims to foster dialogue and cooperation among parliamentary members from the Asia-Pacific region. In addition to attending the assembly, the Taiwanese lawmakers will engage in discussions with their Japanese counterparts. Their talks are expected to cover a range of topics, including economic and trade relations, cultural exchanges, and other areas of mutual interest. The objective of these dialogues is to enhance the friendly ties between Taiwan and Japan. The APPU was established in 1965 by lawmakers from Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, the Philippines, and Thailand. Its founding mission is to promote freedom and democracy as the foundation for peace and prosperity in Asia. The annual assembly serves as a platform for member countries to collaborate on issues of regional and global significance.
