Taiwanese Students Shine at International AI Olympiad with Seven Medals

Taipei: Taiwanese senior high school students won three silver and four bronze medals at the International Olympiad in Artificial Intelligence (IOAI), according to National Central University (NCU), which organized Team Taiwan.

According to Focus Taiwan, the third edition of the competition was held in Astana, Kazakhstan, from August 2-8, attracting 466 students from 108 countries and regions, NCU said in a press release. The university's Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering selected and trained eight students to represent Taiwan at the competition with subsidies from the K-12 Education Administration under the Ministry of Education.

Contestants in the individual contest were required to complete up to six tasks that tested their ability to apply AI tools and machine learning to solve real-world problems, according to the IOAI program booklet. Gold medals were awarded to the top 37 contestants in the individual contest, with silver medals going to the next 72 participants, and bronze medals awarded to the next 110 contestants.

The three silver medalists from Taiwan were Hung Chun-jui, a student at Taichung Municipal Taichung First Senior High School, who placed 44th overall; Wen En-han, from Taipei Municipal Zhonglun High School, who placed 47th; and Wang Hung-min, from Tainan First Senior High School, who placed 97th.

The four bronze medals were won by Yen Kang-yu, a student at Kaohsiung Municipal Kaohsiung Senior High School, who placed 113th overall; Huang Pin-hsun, from Kaohsiung Municipal Kaohsiung Girls' Senior High School, who placed 125th; Hsieh Meng-shan, from Taipei's non-school-based experimental education program, who placed 156th; and Chiu Yen-sung from Taipei Chingshin Academy High School, who placed 162nd.

NCU said this year's IOAI was the second-largest international science Olympiad competition in terms of participants, after the International Mathematical Olympiad, with students from 108 countries and regions taking part. The university plans to continue selecting and training promising AI talent to participate in international competitions.
