Taiwan’s EV supply chain highlighted at Indo-Pacific Business Forum

Taiwan's electric vehicle market has several advantages, including a complete supply chain, a Taiwanese trade official said Friday at a session of the Indo-Pacific Business Forum (IPBF), which is being held virtually this year.

James Huang (???), chairman of the Taiwan External Trade Development Council, said electric forms of transportation will be a mainstream trend in the future, and Taiwan is well-positioned to capitalize because of its advantages in the field.

They include a complete electric vehicle industry supply chain, the presence of the Hon Hai MIH and other electric vehicle platforms that can help partners achieve their goals in the shortest time and at the lowest cost, and supportive government policies, he said.

It also is home to competitive electric two-wheel scooters, Huang said, citing Gogoro's unique battery exchange system and advanced electric scooter systems of KYMCO and SYM Motors.

Taiwan already plays a key role as a value provider in the electric car supply chain because of its strengths in both software and hardware development, reflecting its leadership position in the industry, Huang said.

In the same session of the forum, Sandra Oudkirk, the director of the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT), praised Taiwan's key role in regional high-tech supply chains, and said the United States considered Taiwan a key partner in building trusted global supply chains for critical technologies, medical equipment, and semiconductors.

"Taiwan companies' experience and credibility in producing high-tech components will be an asset for the electric vehicle supply chain in the Indo-Pacific," Oudkirk said.

The session, which focused on how Taiwan developed its comprehensive electric vehicle supply chain, was the second Taiwan-hosted session since the creation of the IPBF in 2018.

Over the past three years, the IPBF has become an important event in promoting trade, investment, and economic cooperation between the United States and its partners throughout the Indo-Pacific, according to the AIT.
