Taiwan’s first sunrise in 2022 forecast to be seen on Orchid Island

If you're hoping to get the first glimpse of 2022 in Taiwan, Orchid Island (Lanyu) is the place to be.

The first rays of sunlight to appear in Taiwan in the New Year will be seen on Orchid Island off the southeastern coast of Taitung County, the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) said on Monday.

It will occur at 6:32 a.m. on New Year's Day in Orchid Island's Dongching, while that on Taiwan proper will occur at Kenting Long Keng Ecological Reserve in the southernmost county of Pingtung and will be seen at 6:35 a.m., according to the CWB forecast.

The sunrise on Orchid Island can be seen at Taitung's Dawu Seashore Park, according to the bureau.

The New Year's Day sunrise in Keelung Islet, another popular scenic view, can be seen at Tiaoshi Coast in New Taipei City's Jinshan district, while Wai'ao Beach in Toucheng township of Yilan County will be a good place to see Turtle Island's sunrise, the bureau said.

The sunrise on Green Island, another beautiful sight, can be seen at Jialulan Recreation Area in Taitung.

People wishing to say good-bye to 2021 by watching the last sunset of this year visible in Taiwan proper can see it along Qigu seawall in Tainan City on Dec. 31, at 5:25 p.m.

In the offshore areas, the sunset will be visible at 5:29 p.m. on Jiangong Islet at the mouth of the Wujiang River and at Lake Cih's causeway, both in Kinmen County.
