Taiwan’s Marine Corps Unveils Quick-Release Tactical Vest in Kaohsiung

Kaohsiung: Taiwan's Marine Corps recently showcased its newly issued quick-release tactical vest during a media tour at a base in Kaohsiung. The innovative design aims to enhance emergency response by enabling rapid removal, a critical feature in high-pressure scenarios.

According to Focus Taiwan, the development of this latest-generation vest began in 2020, with a focus on rapid removal and improved combat mobility. The vest, officially named the "Marine Corps Soldier Protection System-113," was finalized in 2024.

The free-size vest weighs 1.7 kilograms and includes two ballistic plates, each weighing 2.3 kilograms, placed on the front and back. During the media tour at the Marine Corps' 99th Brigade base on July 30, Capt. Tsai Tsung-ting explained that previous tactical vests were cumbersome and challenging to remove when soldiers required immediate medical attention.

Sgt. Hsieh Cheng-hung, part of the development team, highlighted the vest's four quick-release buckles, which facilitate faster medical access. Additionally, the vest features an anti-drowning quick-release pull cord, enabling soldiers to quickly shed the vest if submerged.

Staff Sgt. Chung Ching-ya noted that earlier vests did not accommodate the body shapes of female service members and often resulted in discomfort. The new design offers better weight distribution, alleviating pressure on the shoulders and waist while enhancing mobility.
