Accra:Dongju Island Three individuals were found dead on Thursday after being discovered unconscious in the cabin of a work vessel at Meng'ao Harbor, part of the Matsu archipelago. Emergency responders detected elevated levels of carbon monoxide at the scene.
According to Focus Taiwan, the victims were pronounced dead after being transported to Chukuang Health Center. They were Taiwanese nationals employed by a subcontractor for vessel repairs. This vessel was associated with a contractor tasked by the Lienchiang County government with renovations at Meng'ao Harbor.
The Lienchiang County Fire Department was alerted at 1040 a.m. about the workers being trapped and unconscious. Despite the presence of high carbon monoxide levels, rescuers lacked equipment to check for other gases. Media speculated that biogas exposure might have contributed to the deaths, though the exact cause is still under investigation.
Lienchiang County Deputy Magistrate Chen Kuan-jen stated that the site has been closed, and work has been suspended as authorities cooperate with prosecutors and the Ministry of Labor. He emphasized that those responsible for any violations or negligence will face legal consequences. The vessel, Dongping No. 17, was utilized for transporting construction materials for the harbor project.
