Tropical storm to approach Taiwan early next week

A tropical depression near the Philippines has developed into a tropical storm that will likely approach Taiwan early next week, the Central Weather Bureau reported on Friday.

Tropical Storm Kompasu, this year's 18th storm in the Pacific, is currently some 1,500 kilometers south-southeast of Taiwan's southernmost tip Eluanbi.

It is expected to move in a northeasterly direction at 22 km per hour before reversing course and heading west through the Bashi Channel between Taiwan and the Philippines, according to the bureau's current projection of the storm's path.

The storm will come closest to Taiwan and have the greatest influence on the island on Monday and Tuesday, the bureau said.
