Maryland:Fundamental differences between the United States and China make resolving major disputes challenging, presenting an opportunity for Taiwan to enhance economic and security ties with Washington, according to China expert Miles Yu. According to Focus Taiwan, Yu, who is the director of the China Center at the Washington-based think tank Hudson Institute and a former China policy adviser during the first Trump administration, shared his insights at a Taiwan National Day event in Maryland. He noted that the recent Trump-Xi summit and upcoming meetings highlight the difficulties in resolving disputes due to differing political systems and government operations, particularly concerning tariffs and regional security. Yu emphasized the importance of strategic stability between the U.S. and China to avoid unintended conflicts. He pointed out that the repeated need for summits and ceremonies indicates unresolved fundamental issues between the two countries. For Taiwan, this represents an opportunity to deepe n trade and security integration with the U.S., especially against the backdrop of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) being viewed as a hostile force by both Taiwan and the U.S. At a separate event, Patrick M. Cronin, the Hudson Institute's Asia-Pacific Security Chair, discussed the temporary U.S.-China trade truce. He emphasized that neither nation intends to relinquish its strategic advantages, such as China's critical minerals or the U.S.'s network of allies. Cronin suggested using the temporary easing of tensions to strengthen alliances and industrial capacities in areas like energy and semiconductors to ensure long-term deterrence. With China's upcoming centennial of the People's Liberation Army, Cronin stressed the need for strengthened deterrence around Taiwan and in the Western Pacific but noted that military deterrence alone is insufficient. Enhanced industrial capabilities are also necessary to sustain long-term deterrence efforts.
