Taipei: U.S. Rep. Michael McCaul expressed his desire for the United States and Taiwan to form a partnership focusing on drone production and technology to serve as a deterrent against Chinese aggression. McCaul, who serves as chairman emeritus of the U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee, made these comments during a keynote address at the Ketagalan Forum. The event was organized by Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Taiwan Institute of Economic Research.
According to Focus Taiwan, McCaul emphasized the importance of the U.S.-Taiwan collaboration on drones following his visit to Ukraine, where drones have significantly impacted the conflict with Russia. "The development of the U.S.-Taiwan drone sector will create, truly, a hornet's nest in defense of Taiwan," McCaul stated, emphasizing that deterrence should ultimately lead to peace.
Taiwan is actively seeking U.S. drone cybersecurity and supply chain certifications. The government has proposed a budget of NT$210 billion (US$6.5 billion) for acquiring domestically developed drones, prioritizing supply chains free of Chinese components. McCaul also addressed China's intimidation tactics around Taiwan and its actions in the South China Sea against the Philippines.
Reflecting on his 2023 visit to Taiwan, McCaul recalled encountering an "armada" of Chinese warships and numerous military aircraft. He noted similar aggressive actions during his return following President Lai Ching-te's election in 2024.
McCaul recounted being accused by China of violating its territories while flying over the South China Sea, despite being in international waters. He warned that China's actions are tests of their capabilities and Taiwan's vulnerabilities, hinting at a potential invasion.
He stressed that the Chinese Communist Party's actions are part of a broader strategy to expand its influence in the region and undermine international norms. However, McCaul believes that China's "malign agenda" has backfired.
He praised Taiwan's defense readiness, referencing the Han Kuang military exercises. McCaul asserted that China's aggression has united countries like Japan and the Philippines, leading to a more coordinated international response.
During a meeting with President Lai, McCaul was awarded the Order of Brilliant Star with Grand Cordon, recognizing his contributions to Taiwan-U.S. relations and stability in the Taiwan Strait.
