U.S. Supports Taiwan VP’s Italy Visit; EU Maintains Silence

Taipei: The United States has expressed support for Taiwan's Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim's recent visit to Italy, highlighting the benefits such interactions bring to host countries. A U.S. government spokesperson commented on the trip, emphasizing the positive impact of Taiwan's global relationships, including those in Europe. According to Focus Taiwan, a State Department spokesperson conveyed the U.S. perspective via email, stating that Taiwan's engagement with the international community is advantageous for the citizens of those nations. Hsiao's visit was prompted by an invitation from European Parliament Vice President Pina Picierno and Carlo Corazza, head of the European Parliament Liaison Office in Italy. The trip to Ventotene was aimed at participating in the Second Ventotene European Conference for Freedom and Democracy. The visit was kept under wraps to prevent potential interference from China, Hsiao explained upon her return. China has consistently opposed Taiwan's international engagements. In contrast, the European Union refrained from commenting on the trip. An EU spokesperson reiterated the bloc's commitment to the "One-China Policy," acknowledging the People's Republic of China over Taiwan. However, the EU expressed interest in engaging with Taiwan to advance its interests within the policy framework.
