Woman’s body found in empty container at Taichung Harbor

Police in central Taiwan said Wednesday they had discovered the body of a woman believed to be from the United States in an empty shipping container unloaded at Taichung Harbor.

Taichung Harbor police said they were alerted to the body after receiving a call from a harbor worker around 3 p.m. Wednesday.

According to police, the container was awaiting disposal after being shipped from Los Angeles late last month.

Judging from the documents found on the body, police said they believe the woman is from the U.S. state of Kansas.

Police said they had cordoned off the site and asked prosecutors to perform an autopsy, adding that they were also in contact with the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) and the National Police Agency.

The AIT represents U.S. interests in Taiwan in the absence of official diplomatic relations.
