Taipei: Offices and schools in some mountainous districts and townships across Taiwan will remain closed on Sunday due to heavy rains and disruptions caused by Typhoon Bavi, local governments announced Saturday.
According to Focus Taiwan, the affected areas include Fuxing District in Taoyuan; Wufeng and Jianshih townships in Hsinchu County; Taian, Nanzhuang, and Shihtan townships in Miaoli County; and Heping District in Taichung. Additionally, work and school will also be suspended in Kaohsiung's Namasia, Taoyuan, Maolin, Jiaxian, and Liougui districts, as well as in Wanrong and Mingli villages and Fonglin Township in Hualien County.
The announcement also extends to the outlying Matsu Islands, where work and classes will be suspended on Sunday. Despite the closures in these regions, offices and schools in other parts of Taiwan will continue to operate as usual.
As of Saturday night, Typhoon Bavi was positioned north of Taiwan, moving in a northwest direction. The storm has brought torrential rains and strong winds, prompting these precautionary closures. However, Taitung County on the east coast remains unaffected by the shutdowns.
The Central Weather Administration has predicted that the radius of Typhoon Bavi will move away from Taiwan by late Saturday night or early Sunday morning, potentially alleviating some of the weather-related disruptions.
