Chiayi: A 104-year-old woman in a wheelchair lost her life after being hit by a vehicle while out for a walk with her caregiver in Chiayi's Meishan Township, police reported on Sunday.
According to Focus Taiwan, the incident occurred on Friday afternoon. The Chiayi County Police Department's Jhuci Precinct detailed that officers arrived shortly after 2:34 p.m. to find the elderly woman in a semi-conscious state with head and limb lacerations. Her caregiver, also injured with cuts and scrapes, was fully conscious. Both were transported to Dalin Tzu Chi Hospital for medical attention.
Police stated that the woman, identified by her surname Huang, succumbed to her injuries on Saturday afternoon. Initial investigations indicated that Huang and her 34-year-old caregiver had ventured onto Zhongshan Road to bypass a parked truck when they were struck from behind by a sedan. The impact propelled them approximately 10 meters forward.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause and legal aspects of the accident. The driver of the vehicle was found to have no alcohol in his system at the time of the incident.
