Cold air mass to push mercury down to 10°C in parts of Taiwan

An arriving continental cold air mass could push temperatures down to below 10 degrees Celsius in parts of Taiwan between Tuesday evening and Thursday, according to the Central Weather Bureau (CWB).

Under the influence of the incoming cold front, New Taipei and Keelung are likely to see temperatures consistently below 10 degrees from late Tuesday to Wednesday daytime, the CWB said.

The CWB also warned that temperatures could dip below 10 degrees in Taipei, Taoyuan, Hsinchu County, Hsinchu City, Miaoli, and Kinmen during the period, while the mercury in Lienchiang County (Matsu) could drop to as low as 6 degrees, according to the CWB.

On Tuesday, a cloud system from southern China moving easterly toward Taiwan could bring occasional rainfall to northern and eastern regions of the island and mountainous areas in the south, while partly cloudy weather is expected in most low-lying areas of southern Taiwan, CWB forecaster Yeh Chih-chun (???) said.

Meanwhile, daytime highs on Tuesday will reach 15-16 degrees in northern Taiwan, 19-23 degrees in central and southern Taiwan, with Kaohsiung and Pingtung likely to experience 23 degrees or above.

Meanwhile, lows of 11-13 degrees are forecast for the north, and 17-19 degrees in the south and Hualien and Taitung in the east, according to the CWB.

The rain in the north, east and mountainous areas in the south will ease on Wednesday, with the wet conditions to be replaced by dry and cold weather, Yeh said.

From Tuesday night to early morning Thursday, the mercury could dip to 10-12 degrees in areas north of Tainan and Yilan, 14-16 degrees in Hualien and Taitung and 8 degrees in some western areas.

The incoming continental cold air mass is expected to taper off from Thursday daytime. Between Friday and Sunday, stable weather conditions are expected, with temperatures to rebound to 22-23 degrees in northern Taiwan on Friday.

However, with a strengthening seasonal northeasterly wind system, the weather will turn cooler again on Feb. 20 in northern and northeastern regions, with brief isolated showers.

Due to insufficient moisture in the air, there is a slim chance of snowfall on Taiwan's mountains at an elevation of 3,000-meter above sea level, Yeh said, adding that there is also a small chance of snow on mountains at 3,000-m below sea level because temperatures will not be below freezing and not low enough for snow.
