Taipei: The Central Weather Administration (CWA) is closely monitoring a tropical depression that has developed over waters southwest of Guam. This system is poised to potentially become the western Pacific region's fourth tropical storm in a span of just 10 days. According to Focus Taiwan, CWA weather forecaster Lin Ping-yu indicated during a press conference in Taipei that the tropical depression could evolve into a tropical storm as early as Monday. It is anticipated to approach Luzon in the northern Philippines by Thursday or Friday. However, its trajectory beyond that point remains uncertain due to various influencing factors. Lin noted that the tropical system's future path is subject to change owing to a northern weather system and the Pacific high-pressure system. Some forecasts suggest it may continue on a westward path towards the South China Sea, while others predict it could veer northward, impacting waters east of Taiwan. The potential storm is set to be named Usagi if it reaches tropical stor m status. This occurrence would be unprecedented, marking the first time four tropical storms or higher-level systems have coexisted in November, should it occur before the dissipation of Tropical Storm Yinxing. Yinxing, currently weakening, was recognized as the 22nd tropical storm of 2024 on November 4, followed by the emergence of Tropical Storms Toraji and Man-yi on Saturday. Toraji has since intensified into a typhoon, making landfall in Aurora, Philippines, at 8:10 a.m. on Monday, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration. In response, the local government mandated the evacuation of residents from 2,500 villages on Sunday. Lin also reported that residents north of Taoyuan and in eastern Taiwan should prepare for regional rain due to strengthening seasonal northeasterly winds, with heavier rainfall anticipated in the mountainous areas of the northeast. Furthermore, from early Tuesday morning to early Wednesday morning, the outer bands of Typhoon Toraj i may bring extremely heavy rain to the Keelung coast, mountainous regions in the greater Taipei area, and Yilan County, while Hualien County is expected to experience heavy rain. Daytime temperatures in these regions are forecast to range between 24-27 degrees Celsius, with nighttime temperatures around 22 degrees. A gradual increase in temperatures is expected after the seasonal northeasterly winds weaken on Wednesday.
