Melbourne: Reigning Australian Open women's doubles champion Hsieh Su-wei moved closer to defending her title in Melbourne on Tuesday after a hard-fought three-set match. Hsieh and her partner Jelena Ostapenko from Latvia narrowly defeated Marta Kostyuk of Ukraine and Elena-Gabriela Ruse of Romania with scores of 6-2, 5-7, 7-5 in a match that lasted two hours and 20 minutes, securing their place in the semifinals of the hardcourt tournament. According to Focus Taiwan, the Taiwan-Latvia No. 3 seeded duo will next face the No. 2 seeds Gabriela Dabrowski from Canada and Erin Routliffe from New Zealand. Hsieh is aiming for her 10th Grand Slam title. At 39, Hsieh has already claimed seven Grand Slam women's doubles titles, with victories including two at the French Open and four at Wimbledon. Furthermore, she has won mixed doubles titles at the 2024 Australian Open and Wimbledon. In women's doubles, Hsieh switched her partner from Belgium's Elise Mertens to Ostapenko this year. However, in mixed doubles, she con tinued her partnership with Jan Zielinski of Poland for the second year in a row. Unfortunately, they were ousted in the second round on Monday. Hsieh has not yet secured a US Open win in any category, with her best performances being semifinal losses in women's singles in 2012 and 2023, and in mixed doubles in 2009.
