Melbourne: Hsieh Su-wei and her partner Jelena Ostapenko showcased their tenacity in the Australian Open women's doubles final, but ultimately fell short of securing Hsieh's 10th Grand Slam title. The duo was narrowly defeated by the top-seeded pair of Czech Katerina Siniakova and American Taylor Townsend, who clinched the title with a 6-2, 6-7 (4), 6-3 victory after nearly two and a half hours of intense play.
According to Focus Taiwan, Hsieh and Ostapenko were competing in just their second tournament together. Despite this, they managed to challenge the more consistent and cohesive Siniakova and Townsend. The match seemed to be heading for an early conclusion when Townsend served for the match at 5-4 in the second set. However, Hsieh and Ostapenko showed resilience by breaking Townsend's serve and forcing the set into a tiebreaker.
With a crucial volley from Ostapenko and a strategic service return from Hsieh, the duo secured the second set, leveling the match. This momentum shift gave them a brief edge in the third set when they broke Siniakova's serve to take an early lead. However, the advantage was short-lived as Siniakova and Townsend quickly recovered, breaking Ostapenko's serve and then Hsieh's in the eighth game, which allowed them to close out the match.
Post-match, Hsieh expressed gratitude towards her partner and the fans, acknowledging the team's strong performance over the past two weeks and expressing hope for future success. Hsieh, a seasoned player with seven women's doubles Grand Slam titles and two mixed doubles titles, previously achieved significant victories with various partners, including Elise Mertens in 2024.
