Local businesses to turn off outdoor lights for Earth Hour

Several local businesses in Taiwan said Friday they will join with communities around the world in observing Earth Hour by turning off their external lights from 8:30 p.m to 9:30 p.m. on Saturday.

As part of a global initiative launched by the Swiss-headquartered environmental conservation group World Wildlife Fund (WWF) in 2007, the local firms are seeking to turn words into environmental protection action, according to participating companies.

The annual global campaign, which is usually held in late March, encourages individuals, communities and businesses to turn off non-essential lights for one hour as a symbol of their commitment to help make the planet more sustainable.

Financial institutions including Citibank Taiwan, Yuanta Financial Holding, and Cathay Financial Holdings said they will ask their branches, offices and many of their partners across Taiwan to take part in the campaign.

Meanwhile, E.SUN Financial Holding and HSBC Bank (Taiwan) said they will turn off their outdoor lights for three nights from March 25-27.

McDonald's Taiwan will also support Earth Hour, with the company saying more than 330 stores across the country will turn off their iconic golden arches.
